Quick answer · Election Day

Is Election Day a Holiday? What’s Open on Nov. 3, 2026, State by State

Election Day is not a federal holiday, so post offices, banks and the stock market are open. Here are poll hours in 22 states, the seven states where it’s a state holiday, and the two Election Day deals we confirmed, each checked on an official page.

Summary card: on Election Day, Nov. 3, 2026, post offices, banks, stock markets and federal offices are open; Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Michigan, Rhode Island and West Virginia list it as a state holiday, and New York as a legal holiday that floats for some state workers

The short answer

No, Election Day isn’t a federal holiday.

On Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, post offices are open and mail is delivered, the Federal Reserve and most banks are open, the New York Stock Exchange trades normal hours, and federal offices are open.

Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Michigan, Rhode Island and West Virginia list Election Day as a 2026 state holiday, so their state government offices close. New York lists it as a legal holiday but has made it a floating holiday for some state workers.

In most of the 22 states we checked, polls open at 6, 6:30 or 7 a.m. and close between 6 p.m. (Indiana) and 9 p.m. (New York), local time. The table below has each one. If you’re in line at closing time, stay in line.

Two companies have posted Election Day deals: Krispy Kreme gives voters a free Original Glazed doughnut, and Lyft takes 50% off one ride to the polls, up to $10, with code VOTE26.

What time do polls open and close?

Each state sets its own hours, always in local time. Here are 22 states, each from its own election office’s page for the Nov. 3 election.

If you’re in line when the polls close, stay in line. Nearly every state page we read says voters already in line at closing time can still vote.

Election Day deals and rides

Two companies have posted Election Day offers on their own pages, and the table below has the fine print.

Krispy Kreme’s free doughnut needs no purchase: say you voted or show the sticker. Lyft’s half-off ride works only if you add code VOTE26 in the app before you book, and the discount stops at $10.

Uber hadn’t posted a 2026 Election Day ride offer in its newsroom when we checked on Nov. 2.

Two holidays right after it

Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, is a federal holiday and is on the Postal Service’s and the Federal Reserve’s holiday lists. The stock market stays open.

Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 26, is on all four lists, and the NYSE also closes early, at 1 p.m. ET, on Friday, Nov. 27.

For what closes that day, see Is Veterans Day a federal holiday?; for meals and discounts, Veterans Day free meals; for store hours, see Is it open on Thanksgiving?

What we don't know yet

  • Indiana, Maryland, Montana, New Jersey, Virginia and Louisiana are often listed as observing Election Day, but we could not confirm a 2026 state holiday on a page from those states when we checked. A New Jersey bill (A-188) would remove Election Day as a state holiday; it had not passed in the version we saw.
  • School closures, which are decided district by district.
  • Uber: no 2026 Election Day ride offer in its newsroom when we checked on Nov. 2.
  • Poll hours in the 28 states and D.C. not in our table: we listed only states whose hours we read on their own election office’s page.

When any of this is confirmed, it goes into the page and the update history below.
